Song specifics:
1. Alternate early version recorded at Pathe Marconi
Studios in Paris during Some Girls sessions (Jan. 1978)
2-3. Alternate early versions recorded at Compass Point
studios, Nassau Bahamas Jan.-Feb. 1979 during Emotional
Rescue sessions
4-5. Undercover sessions. 4. is early take from Hit Factory
in New York, May 1983. 5. Instrumental backing track, Pathe
Marconi Studios Paris Nov.-Dec. 1982
6-11. Dirty Work outtakes Pathe Marconi Studios Paris in
Novemeber of 1985
12-13. Early studio Steel Wheels rehearsal versions, Air-studios
Montserrat March 1989
14. Soul ballad improv with lead sung by Bobby Womack and Don
Covay, who were Stones inspirations in the '60s. Stones back
them up, and Mick can be heard occasionally.
In sum: A nice collection of 1980s outtakes as part of an apparent eight CD set covering 1962-89 by Invastion Unlimited (no, I don't have any of the others). Some of these don't have the lyrics worked out yet, so Mick does his usual creative "vamping" he uses when building a song. The sound overall is excellent, but there are a couple of dips in quality and completeness. For instance, Mixed Emotions and
Hard Place aren't complete songs, just some bits as they work out a bridge or something. The sound
on those two songs is a bit muddy but listenable and worthwhile in a historical context. Still,
the overall piece is interesting, enjoyable and worth adding to your Stones collection (in my
opinion).
